This section lets you to fine tune the performance of Netoscope according to your network connection and other special needs.
For instance, if you use a modem to connect to the Internet, you probably would want Netoscope to stop monitoring whenever the modem is not being used. Otherwise, it will wrongfully assume that all services have failed.
COMMANDS
- Permanent: Netoscope assumes that the services being monitored can and should always be reachable, so it monitors them unconditionally. This option is useful when Netoscope is:
- installed on the same computer it is monitoring.
- installed on a computer that is connected to a corporate network.
- monitoring services on an Intranet.
- Via Dial-Up Networking (DUN): Netoscope monitors only when a network connection using DUN is active. This option is useful for monitoring remote services from a computer accessing the Internet using a modem.
- Dependent on the following pilot service: Netoscope monitors only when the following service is running. This option is useful when you don't care whether the services being monitored are running, unless the pilot service is. It is also useful if you know that services will fail if the pilot service does. For instance, if your Internet connection is unreliable, you may want to select a service on your ISP's server or a popular web site as a pilot service.
Pilot service location:
- URL: Host name or IP address of the server containing the service of interest.
- Port: Enter the port number of the service to monitor. You may optionally follow it
with a space character and a description of the port.
